Value-Based Healthcare and ERAS®

Trained at the Karolinska Institutet and serves as Senior Professor of Surgery at Örebro University, Sweden. He has chaired international societies including ESPEN and IASMEN in the ISS, and co-founded and chaired the ERAS® Society from 2010 to 2022. He proposed preoperative carbohydrate treatment and studies surgical stress metabolism, nutrition, and ERAS®, publishing over 300 original contributions, international guidelines, textbooks, book chapters, and reviews (H-index 81). He delivers around 20 main lectures worldwide annually and was awarded the International Surgical Society prize in 2022.

Trained at the Karolinska Institute, Harvard Medical School, and the MRC Human Genetics Unit in Edinburgh, and is an Associate Professor at Karolinska Institute. He joined the Stockholm office of the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) in 1996 and worked with the firm for 25 years, founding and leading BCG's Global Payer and Provider sector and its Health Systems sector, and leading BCG's work on value-based healthcare. He is a co-founder and board chair of the International Consortium for Health Outcomes Measurement (ICHOM), an independent not-for-profit that has developed global standards for measuring outcomes that matter to patients, now covering 60% of the global burden of disease. He is a Distinguished Fellow with the World Economic Forum's Health and Healthcare group. In November 2022, McGraw Hill published his book The Patient Priority. He has authored 30 papers in peer-reviewed journals.

Senior Consultant Colorectal Surgeon at Tan Tock Seng Hospital, National Healthcare Group (NHG) Health, Singapore. He led the development of the hospital's ERAS® programme, recognised as an ERAS® Centre of Excellence, and as Clinical Director of the NHG ERAS® Perioperative Care Office now oversees ERAS® implementation across NHG Health hospitals. He is also Head of the Division of Surgical Oncology at the NHG Cancer Institute and NHG Health's Surgical Value Officer, roles in which he champions appropriate and value-based care through care redesign, outcomes improvement, and capability building. He leads the Value Academy at the Centre for Healthcare Innovation, advancing value-based healthcare across Singapore's health system, and as Treasurer of the ERAS® Society plays a pivotal role in advancing ERAS® across the Asia-Pacific region, having supported more than ten hospitals in establishing their ERAS® programmes.
